Breaking the diagnosis-treatment-symptom cycle

Mapping your Journey to Health Restoration

Functional Medicine is defined as patient-centered, science-based health care that identifies and addresses the underlying triggers that cause disease and dysfunction. Its therapeutic goals are to reverse or prevent disease progression and enhance vitality. The Functional Medicine health care approach recognizes that our bodies want to be well and that each individual patient is unique. What may work for some, may not work for others. It aims to improve and optimize health at the psychological, biochemical or structural levels through therapies that restore, repair and rebuild that intrinsic balance. Its goal is to intervene before imbalances become later diseases utilizing intelligent and individualized combinations of treatments or protocols.

A 2014 report by the National Health Council states approximately 133 million people in the United States have ongoing, chronic diseases; with that number projected to grow to 157 million by 2020.  Almost one-third of Americans are currently living with three (3) or more chronic conditions.

Do you remember learning the "Skeleton Dance" about the bones of the body -- "the foot bone is connected to the ... leg bone, and the leg bone is connected to the ... knee bone" and so on?  It turns out a lot of today's chronic illnesses are connected to the gut.  Everything from anxiety/depression to thyroid issues to arthritis, even allergies and asthma. They are ALL connected to the health of your gut.  Your gut health is connected to your lifestyle -- long term psychological and physical stress,  poor sleep, diets of refined sugar and processed foods, lack of exercise and environmental toxins, which can have a negative impact on your overall health.  I guess we could call this the "Dis-ease Dance" -- "the arthritis is connected to your ... gut health, and the (insert your illness here) is connected to your ...... gut health."

So the question to ask is, Do YOU have the health you desire?  Or maybe the question to ask is, are YOU tired of having symptoms with no resolutions?  Have YOU had it and do not want to take another prescription to fix yet another symptom that has popped up.  Has your physician told you that you must make some lifestyle changes (lose weight, exercise, get more sleep, etc), but you do not know how to get started?  Are you one of the 133 million suffering from one of the following chronic diseases:

  • Anxiety/depression
  • Headaches, migraines
  • Insulin Resistance
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Hormone Imbalance
  • Digestive issues (reflux, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, IBS, etc)
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Hashimoto's/Grave's Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis)

Making simple lifestyle & dietary changes have been shown to prevent and even reverse most symptoms and many serious diseases, including 93% of diabetes, 81% of heart attacks, 50% of strokes, and 36% of cancers.

I know how overwhelming it can be to make lifestyle changes to restore health.  And yes it does require time and effort on your part, that let's be honest, you may not feel like you have right now. This is where a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach can make all the difference.  Health coaching has been shown to play a key role in promoting healthy behavior, and motivating a willingness to make lifestyle changes.  Together we can work to break the diagnosis-treatment-symptom (DTS) cycle and restore YOUR health.
